Elephants pose danger at night

Environment and Tourism Minister Willem Konjore told a press conference in Windhoek that four people had been killed by an elephant attacks in the Caprivi and Erongo regions during the past six weeks. Another person was seriously injured by an elephant at Impalila Island in Caprivi. People in the Caprivi, Erongo, Kavango and Kunene regions should avoid walking at night in areas were elephants occur said, Environment and Tourism Minister Willem Konjore. The ministry has developed a human wildlife conflict management policy to address the problem.

The four people died were identified as Samatutu Isaks (77), Costa Jonas Ndumba (39), Rosina Simango (47) and David Tjangura (60).

Hon Minister Konjore expressed his condolences with the families.Particular tourist, have also been urged to avoid harassing and disturbing elephants at water holes and favorite grazing areas such as riverbanks, as such behaviors may anger the animal.

The Park Innovation Grant

Another activity of the project includes introducing incentives for park management and thus the project will introduce the Park Innovation Grant for MET field staff. This is a flexible grant scheme which can be accessed by MET field staff to fund small and innovative projects. Selection procedures will be based on merit and the Selection Committee will award grants to projects that show the most promise to improve park management and services to visitors, neighbours and communities.

Examples of Projects that qualify for a grant are: Diversifying park attractions (hiking trails and gardens); small scale projects on water conservation, recycling, sustainable energy use etc. Let your innovative mind take control. Note that the grant will not cater for routine park management activities, substituting the MET budget, bursaries, overtime allowances or salary top-ups or single equipment purchases that are nmot linked to the project.
