There are two demonstration sites under the Southern Parks: The Sperrgebiet National Park and the /Ai-/Ais Hotsprings Game Park. Under the Sperrgebiet National Park, the demo-site objective was the creation and effective management of the Sperrgebiet through a multi-sectoral management system involving mining companies, MME, regional council and non-governmental organisations. The objective of the /Ai-/Ais demo-site was to ensure effective functioning of a transfrontier park, providing economies of scale in the administration of PA management functions and improved conservation status.
Progress was achieved under these demo-sites as follows:
Sperrgebiet National Park
SPAN supported a planning framework for the park including the development of a Habitat Management Plan, Park Management Plan, Infrastructure Development Plan and Tourism Options for informed decision-making in this biodiversity hotspot. With 30 percent of the park under mining license, a collaborative mechanism was needed to serve as a forum to discuss park management issues. The multi-sectoral Park Advisory Committee was initiated and approved by MET, with its first meeting held in February 2009. The committee is spearheading enhanced tourism access to the newly proclaimed park and is investigating a suitable name for the park.
/Ai-/Ais Hotsprings Game Park
SPAN has worked closely with the Park's Joint Management Board (JMB) to implement transfrontier activities. These include developing Integrated Conservation and Development Plans, participating in JMB working groups and initiating the cross border invasive alien species programme with the Working for Water Programme in South Africa. SPAN also commissioned a feasibility study on the Apollo 11 Caves as a potential tourism site. Through a model collaboration, the Project co-financed the refurbishment of the Fish River Canyon Viewpoint and developed information posters at the viewpoint. Park Management and Business Plans were completed and submitted to MET for approval.
